Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Requests for deferral of missed coursework or examinations

If you need to request a deferral of a final examination(s), mid-term examination(s), test(s) or coursework due to extenuating circumstances (i.e. bereavement, religious observances, medical reasons), you must follow the steps outlined below to apply for consideration:

Final examinations

  • How to Apply

    If you need to request deferral of a final examination(s), you must complete and submit the Application for Deferred Final Examinations and the Academic Consideration forms for your respective faculty. 

    Note: If your extenuating circumstance(s) affect courses from more than one faculty, you must fill out a separate Academic Consideration form for each faculty. Only the course(s) pertaining to one specific faculty should be included in each Academic Consideration form.

    To apply:

    1. Go to MyOntarioTech.
    2. Select the Current students box.
    3. In the Undergraduate forms box, select Application for Deferred Final Examinations.
    4. Complete and submit both the online Application for Deferred Final Examinations and the online Academic consideration forms.
  • Important Deadlines

    Applications for deferred final examinations must be submitted by the below deadlines:

    Religious observances and competing academic conflicts

    All other reasons

    It is your responsibility to know when the exam periods are for all semesters and not book anything that will conflict with your exam schedule. Visit the Academic Calendar for exam dates.

  • I am registered with Student Accessibility Services

    If you are registered with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and are requesting a deferred final examination due to a conflict with your accommodations, you must contact your SAS counsellor who will determine if a deferred exam is warranted.

    Your application must be submitted no later than three business days after the scheduled exam date.

  • Fees

    A $45 non-refundable administrative fee will be placed on your tuition account, per exam, when your exam deferral is approved. It is your responsibility to pay this fee as soon as you receive notification of the approval.

    Note: You will not be charged the fee if you submitted an application for bereavement, religious observances, or if you are rescheduling exams as part of an accommodation plan.


Coursework, test(s) or mid-term examination(s)

  • How to Apply

    If you need to request deferral of coursework, tests or mid-term examinations due to extenuating circumstances (bereavement, religious observances, medical reasons) you must follow the steps provided below, according to the weight of the final grade and type of the missed work.

    Coursework worth 20 per cent or less of your final grade.

    • Contact your course instructor directly to request consideration for missed coursework worth 20 per cent or less of your final grade.

    Coursework worth more than 20 per cent of your final grade, any mid-term examination(s) or test(s).

    Note: If the affected course(s) are from more than one faculty, you must fill out a separate Academic Consideration form for each faculty. Only the course(s) pertaining to one specific faculty should be included in each Academic Consideration form.

    To apply:

    1. Log into MyOntarioTech.
    2. Select the Current students box.
    3. In the Undergraduate forms box, select Deferral of coursework and examinations.
    4. If prompted, login using your network credentials. 
    5. Complete and submit the online form. 
  • Important Deadlines

    Completed Academic Consideration form(s) and supporting documentation (if applicable), must be submitted by the following deadlines depending on the extenuating circumstance(s):

    Religious observances

    • Seven business days prior to the coursework, test or mid-term examination date, if for religious reasons.

    All other reasons

    • No later than three business days after the missed coursework, test or mid-term examination date for all other reasons.
  • Fees
    There is no fee for submitting an Academic Consideration request in response to missed coursework, tests or mid-term examinations due to extenuating circumstances.
