Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Course numbering

Courses are designated by a three- or four-character subject code, and a five-character course identifier. The first four characters of the course identifier are numeric. The fifth is an alpha character, denoted as follows:

  • C – continuing education course
  • E  English for academic purposes
  • G – graduate course
  • T – Trent University course
  • U undergraduate course

Repeated courses

As of fall 2012, undergraduate students may repeat any course a maximum of two times. The most recent grade is used in calculating the grade point average.

Prior to fall 2012, undergraduate students could repeat courses in which they received a grade of D or lower. Only the highest grade was used in calculating the grade point average.

Repeated courses are denoted as follows:

  • I – mark included in GPA
  • E – mark excluded from GPA

Explanation of terms

  • AW – administrative withdrawal
  • CO – continuance grade
  • CR – credit granted on work experience
  • DEF – deferred examination granted
  • INC – incomplete
  • T – transfer credit awarded*
  • W – withdrawn
  • WF – failure for non-attendance
  • YR – full-year Trent University course

*Denotes direct equivalency or alternative credit assessment.

Academic standing

Undergraduate academic standing

Clear standing

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.

Academic warning

Prior to fall 2015: Students whose cumulative grade point average falls between 1.5 and 1.99. As of fall 2015: This standing will no longer be used.

Probation

Prior to fall 2015: Students whose cumulative grade point average falls between 1.0 and 1.49, or who receive a second academic warning. As of fall 2015: Students whose cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0 will be placed on probation.

Suspension

Prior to fall 2015: Students whose cumulative grade point average falls below 1.0, or who fail to fulfil the conditions of probation. As of fall 2015: Students will be suspended if they fail to fulfil the conditions of probation.

Dismissal

Students readmitted after a period of suspension will be readmitted on probation. As of fall 2016: Students readmitted after a period of suspension will be readmitted on probation. Students who fail to comply with the conditions of reinstatement or whose performance would result in suspension for a second time will be permanently dismissed. (Prior to fall 2015, students were dismissed.)

Program dismissal

As of fall 2016: Students who have been dismissed from a program may be eligible to move into another degree or major provided they are not on suspension and are not prohibited from taking required courses pursuant to any academic regulation or university policy.

Graduate academic standing

To continue in a prescribed program of study at the graduate level, a student must maintain a minimum B- average overall.
