Legal protection program

The Legal Protection Program is provided through the Student Union, and ensures that full-time and part-time Ontario Tech students have the tools and financial means to defend your legal rights, have access to legal information via a toll-free legal assistance helpline, and have further counsel should you qualify for legal representation.

What does legal representation include?

Housing disputes: Legal expenses arising from a dispute over a housing lease, such as a disputed rent increase, an illegal eviction, or a breach of a condition in the lease.

Employment disputes: Legal expenses arising from a dispute with a current or future employment contract, with respect to labour standards for grievances not covered by a union or government agency. This does not include occupational health and safety issues.

Disputes with an academic institution: A student’s legal expenses in the event of a dispute with an academic institution. This excludes cases related to sexual misconduct or a criminal act.

What's covered?
  • Fees of lawyers or bailiffs.
  • Legal expenses, such as court fees and attendance, and witness expenses.
  • Experts’ fees (up to a maximum of $1,000).

In addition, students can get on-demand legal information on any legal situation using the toll-free legal assistance helpline.

When does it start and how can I opt-out?

The Legal Protection Program is available for students every year beginning in September.

You can opt-out of the Legal Protection Program during the change-of-coverage period on the StudentCare website.

  • Fall semester change-of-coverage period: September 3 to 30, 2023.
