Frequently asked questions
-
When did Winter-term classes officially begin?
Most classes commenced on January 17, one week later than originally planned.
Note: Exceptions apply to some programs with practicum components (specifically Education and Nursing). These programs began before January 17. Students in these programs received details directly from their program office. -
What will the mode of instruction be for my classes, lectures and labs?
Most classes, lectures, labs, and tutorials will take place online between Monday, January 17 and Monday, January 31.
On January 18, Ontario Tech announced that, in consultation with local and provincial medical officers of health, the university would return to its ‘pre-Omicron variant’ plan for on-campus lecture, tutorial, and labs beginning the week of Monday, January 31. Read the full update for students.
Note: A limited number of programs within the Faculty of Education (FEd) and the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHSc) that include clinical labs, medical labs, and practicum placements will take place in-person prior to Monday, January 31. FEd and FHSc have communicated further information to students in these programs.
-
Will classes remain in an online mode only for the rest of the term?
On January 18, Ontario Tech announced that, in consultation with local and provincial medical officers of health, the university will return to our ‘pre-Omicron variant’ plan for on campus lecture, tutorial, and labs beginning the week of Monday, January 31.
It is anticipated that all classes, labs, tutorials and other academic activities that were scheduled to have on-campus components for the Winter term will be offered on-campus before the Family Day holiday and study break week. We are planning a gradual return with this phase-in occurring throughout the month of February. More details will follow.
-
I was scheduled to participate in a practicum, internship, co-op or other experiential learning experience; will I still be allowed to do so?
The answer to this question depends on a number of factors, including program of study, placement agency capacities, public-health directives and possible travel restrictions.
At this point, most current internships and co-ops that are scheduled to continue for the Winter term, as well as those beginning in January 2022 (e.g. for Science, Engineering or Business and Information Technology programs), will proceed as planned. Students should contact their faculty for further information and updates.
The Faculty of Education and Faculty of Health Sciences will connect with students about practicum and clinical/medical laboratory requirements.
-
How will this impact my Winter schedule (for professional programs with practicum requirements such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, and Education)?
The Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Health Sciences (Nursing and Medical Laboratory Science programs) have connected with affected students directly regarding practicum and clinical/medical laboratory requirements.
-
Will the Winter-term study break be cancelled?
No. We recognize how important the mid-term break is for our students, particularly during COVID-19. The Winter-term study break will run Tuesday, February 22 through Sunday, February 27 (immediately following the Family Day long weekend).
-
How will the delayed start affect the completion of the normal 12-week term?
Instruction will run Monday, January 17 through Thursday, April 14. Any course with a Friday delivery will have a make-up date scheduled on Saturday, April 9.
The term will now end on Thursday, April 14 for all students except those enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program. BEd students should consult directly with the Faculty of Education about their schedule.
-
Will the Winter-term final exam period be shorter?
No. The normal 10-day exam period will run Saturday, April 16 through Wednesday, April 27. Students are advised not to make commitments during this period (e.g. vacation, travel plans).
-
How will the delayed start affect course add, drop or withdrawal deadlines?
Add/drop dates are being adjusted to reflect the one-week delay of the beginning of the Winter term. Please see the Academic schedule for specific dates.
-
When will Winter-term grades be released?
The grade-release date has been moved to Monday, May 2. Please see the Academic schedule for other important dates.
-
