Can I participate in work integrated learning?
Yes, the university is working hard to ensure that co-op, internships and other work integrated learning opportunities remain available as our industry partners begin to reopen. Information and updates are available at the Career Centre or by contacting your faculty coordinator.
-
Do I still need to purchase books for my online courses?
Some courses may require textbooks. These can be purchased through the Ontario Tech bookstore.
-
If I am not in-person, do I need to purchase scrubs, uniforms, etc.?
If and when these items are required, they will be included on your course outline and required materials list.
-
If I live in a different time zone, will all classes be recorded?
Students will be able to view course readings and materials in Canvas, the university learning management system. Many courses are also being recorded so students can participate if they are in a different time zone, and are not able to attend at the scheduled class time.
-
If I only register for online classes, will I be missing required courses I need to take?
It is possible that you may miss out on courses which contain an in-person component. We recommend meeting with your academic advisor to make a schedule that works for your situation.
-
What are the technical requirements I will need to access online classes?
Visit our laptop standards web page to learn more about minimum laptop specifications for your faculty/program.
-
What fees will I have to pay?
You will be charged tuition and ancillary fees based on the number of credit hours they are registered in. These fees ensure you will continue to have access to important services and resources that are now being delivered at a distance. Other fees cover the year-round costs for maintaining and operating buildings and facilities for student use that are not funded through general university revenues. Some fees, however, may be reduced or waived where access to the services has been decreased or where services are no longer being delivered. These may include the Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass), infrastructure enhancements, sport and recreation, and printer services. For more information, visit the ancillary fees 2020-2021 page on the Office of the Registrar website.
-
What will the in-person component look like?
In-person components such as labs and practicums will follow the recommendations of the public health authority. It is likely that physical distancing will limit the number of students who can participate in these activities at any one time, and this will result in smaller groups. For example, some students may be participating in-person in a lab, while others would participate online, and the schedule will alternate.
-
Will classes be synchronous or asynchronous?
Online classes will be a blend of synchronous sessions where you will meet virtually with instructors online, and asynchronous sessions where you will access course material on your own time.
-
Will my professors have online office hours?
Yes, professors will offer online contact hours.
-
Will there be more courses offered in spring/summer 2021 if I am taking a reduced course load in Fall 2020?
Spring/summer semester options will be determined in early 2021, and will be posted in March.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, do I need to go to the Doctor to get a medical note for missed assignments, tests and exams if I am unwell?
We will be suspending the need for you to present medical notes for missed assignments, tests and exams until further notice. However, you must fill out the academic consideration form and must also inform your course instructor that you will be away for medical reasons.
In accordance with the university’s academic conduct policy, you must be honest in your use of medical absences. Any misrepresentation of facts that have an effect on academic evaluation could result in academic sanctions—including but not limited to, suspension.
